Lesbian crime novel written by Nicola Griffith? Featuring a female protagonist who has come to terms with the nature of violence? Oh yes. I’ve had this on my to be read list for several years now and thought to go looking for it at my local library. Today was scheduled to be a quiet day at home alone, so I indulged in a spree of reading, and finished it cover to cover. Yum.

The bad news: if I’d been on the ball and less skeptical about a western fantasy, I could have read this book ages ago and gotten it autographed by the author when she was in town doing a book signing. The good news: it’s a seductively good book. Me read a western? Set in Tombstone? With the Earp brothers running around causing problems? And I liked it too.

Lots of big names in this one, including some big name directors. The premise is that a new bellboy is stuck minding the shop by himself at a hotel on New Year’s eve. Things go very strange indeed. It tries very hard, and it manages some laughs, but it slides into creepy in a hurry and never escapes.

Just imagine if a young Roman Polanski had some campy fun with vampires in the style of Mel Brooks. Now tone it down just a bit. Not too much. There. Fun. And if you can’t bring yourself to sit through the entire thing (although it’s not very long), then you have to at least check out the DVD extra: Vampires 101. It’s got the highlight reel built into it and is funny all on its own.

It took a while for me to get into this book. Maybe fifty pages or so? I’m not sure why it took so long, but once it got its hooks into me, it didn’t let go. Another case where I’m looking forward to reading the rest of the series. (For someone who has been actively avoiding serialized stories, I sure have been falling for a number of them lately.)

More good stuff from Elizabeth Bear. A derelict and dirty (I love the filth and dirt) generation ship with AIs running around in gothly duds, a literal tree of the fruit of knowledge, a sentient cutting torch, and some kick-ass characters take us on a great story. And it manages a satisfying ending while still clearly being the first of several. Goodness.
